Media evaluation question 1

In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and
conventions of real media products?

This shows the title opening in our thriller and Seven thriller. This was used in "Seven" and helps to create mystery as it suggests what there watching has already happened which creates suspense. Therefore showing that i have used media conventions of a thriller. I have used this as it helps create mystery and suspense within the audience and adds to the reality of the film. This is because this is how crimes are shown to the public and as people relate the titles to crime it creates realness and suspense. Also it foreshadows the thriller to be suspenseful and a twist due to the simpleness of both fonts.

The black and white are used to suggests a flashback. The light intensity is increased also to add to the realness. This was done in "Bourne identity", which shows that we have developed the increased light intensity to become black and white as well to clearly indicate to the audience that it is a flashback. Moreover the unclearness of the shot helps to create tension and worry. Whereas in the Bourne image it is clearly demonstrating the violence and facial expressions. Therefore showing how we developed the shot.

The close-up in "Don't Breathe" has been used to clearly show the facial expressions of the character to show the audience something terrible has happened or is about to happen. The thought of what happened caused lots of suspense. I have tried to replicate this shot but to show the fear and anger of what has happened. This shows i have used media conventions in my product. Also as this is a common technique used in thrillers it subconsciously increases the tension of viewers as they know something is going to happen or has and the wait but knowing creates lots of tension.

Over-shoulder shot in "Get out" is used to show how confused the women is at what the man has said. It shows the facial expression and movement, of whoever the camera is behind, which can seem suspicious. This instantly causes suspense and confusion in the audience which entices them to know more. This is one reason we used this, however we used it to challenge the white detective stereotype ,get out and Sherlock Holmes etc. This is because we have a smartly dressed black police inspector which will expand our audience and shows how we have broken traditional media thriller conventions.

In "The ring" they have put an object in front of the camera while filming. This gives the effect of being watched and as the audience doesn't know by what it creates fear. We have used it for the same reason but to also make it more interactive for the audience. This is because they have a first person view of what is happening which gives the effect they are there. This is useful to generate a wider audience as all viewers enjoys feeling as though they are in the movie therefore increasing our audience to everyone.

In "Friday the 13th" the women was killed and this is common with many of the thrillers. This links to the stereotype of women being more vulnerable than me. Although this may lessen our target audience it is an effective method to keep our viewers interested within the film. Furthermore as she is killed and blood is shown it merges with horror, therefore widening our target audience. Also as thriller and horror commonly go hand in hand well together it shows how we used an effective media convention well.

The phone call in "Mission impossible" has been used to connote danger. this is because phone calls are associated with bad things and usually mean someone will be found, such as in "Taken", or bad information, "mission impossible". We have used the phone call to break the tension and scare the audience. This is because the phone call stops the music and creates suspense as the inspector is about to be told something important. This is a media convention we have followed but used to break tension for a second then let it all flood back. This will keep our audience on the edge of there seat which is an important convention of thriller showing how we are following traditional thriller conventions.

Using blank screens in thrillers are useful to create suspense and is commonly used. This makes the audience wonder what's happening or going to, helping to keep them on the edge if their seat. This was used in ring and is a convention we have followed. It has been used to create suspense and blocks out the inspectors phone call making the audience wonder what he's been told. Also it connotes bad news and helps to keep the audience enticed.

Image result for paramount

Usually institutions are used for brand awareness purposes and do not connote anything of the movie. The paramount suggest good family film due to the connotations of stars and getting over the mountains. This indicates a happy film. Whereas our institution indicates thriller and horror due to the dark background connoting death and disaster. Also the way the candle lights is unstable making it look like it could go out, therefore connoting our thriller genre and showing how we have developed media convention to help entice our audience.
